Member Spotlight: Kristen Defreitas

When and Why did you first start CrossFit?

I started Full Metal CrossFit just about a year ago.  I had done the gym thing, and even though I went with a friend there was no comradery.  I had taken classes but always felt like I wasn’t as good as the others.  I had driven by Full Metal many times and had read up on what CrossFit was so one Sunday I turned to my husband and I said, I want to go in and see what this is about.  I wanted something different.

Why do you keep doing it, what keeps you coming back?

I keep coming back because of the people and the atmosphere.  I have never felt that I wasn’t good enough or strong enough to be there.  I have always felt encouraged by coaches and the people. I’ve come to love “my 5pm class and classmates”.

What advice do you have for those new to CrossFit?

My advice for anyone who is thinking of joining is never think for one minute that you are not good enough, fast enough or strong enough to do CrossFit.  You’ll always be encouraged and the WOD’s are geared to each individual’s ability.  It’s gratifying when you finally reach that one goal you’ve been working so hard to get to and the coaches are just as proud of you as you are of yourself.

Top 3 favourite movements:  My favorite movements are anything I can get through without feeling like I’m about to pass out.  I wouldn’t say my favorite, but these aren’t the worst:  Front or back squats.
