Member Spotlight: Lara Al-Jamal

When and Why did you first start CrossFit?

I started CrossFit in August of 2017. I was always attracted to the idea of working out in an environment where there are no machines, treadmills, or elliptical. Instead you’re training with barbells, pull-up rigs, ropes and tractor tires, and I loved the rawness of that.

Why do you keep doing it, what keeps you coming back?

The main thing that keeps me coming back is the community. I love how everyone you meet will come from a different walk of life with their own unique stories and their own experiences, but when that timer counts down to 0 we’re all working towards the same goal. You could have absolutely nothing in common with someone, yet you’re joking around with them after a WOD about how brutal it was.

What advice do you have for those new to CrossFit?

Advice I have for new members: Keep coming back. In the beginning you will be uncomfortable, you will be out of your element, and you will hurt a LOT. Keep coming back and you will overcome all of those things, and it’s going to make you physically and mentally stronger as a person. Stick to it and before you know it, you’ll be in the best shape of your life.
