Member Spotlight: Michelle Christie

When did you start CrossFit?
I tried out CrossFit during the summer of 2010 with a colleague and my sister-in-law.  I fully committed in Sept 2010 to Full Metal CF.

What do you love about CrossFit?
I love so many things.  I love the camaraderie among members, the friends, the pure hard work, learning new skills, the coaches who don’t let you give up or “cheat”.  I love the feeling I get AFTER I’ve completed a WOD.  I love the challenge and mastering movements/setting PRs.  I love the physical change to my body and having strangers ask if I’m an “athlete”.  But most of all, I love the good example I’m setting for my girls – to work hard, that you won’t always win, but keep trying and have faith in yourself – to the point that my little one has now set up my box with weights on top so she can do pull-ups on my pull-up bar at the cottage!  It’s awesome!

What made you want to compete more in CrossFit?
I started competing in CrossFit at member comps just for fun, to see how I compared to the other members of our gym.  Then I realized I wasn’t bad and if I kept pushing myself I could someday get good.  I realized that when I’m in a competition, I push myself more than I do for the regular daily WODs.  I know I shouldn’t but somehow your brain just knows it’s time to step up.  Now I’m addicted…  I made the Masters Qualifiers this year so now I’m thinking it’s possible to make it to the Games…when I’m 50!!!

If you could choose a WOD against Camille, what would it be?
Hmmm, since she could kick my ass in everything, I’d say Annie.  At least I stand half a chance of almost keeping up!  I love doubleunders and sit-ups!!  And since I haven’t figured out how to shave more than a couple seconds off my time, I’m betting she could force me!!

What keeps you coming back for more?

The challenge.  Knowing I can do better.  I’m competitive, even though I don’t like to admit it [Symbol] Total Type A personality!  Also, I love the people here…  I’ve thought about other gyms that might be closer but the thought of leaving the friendships I’ve built, people know me, all our members are great at motivating and supporting you.  I remember a time when I hadn’t made it in for a bit and I got an email from the Head Coach asking if I was ok.  A regular gym wouldn’t care!

Any advice to give to someone new to CrossFit?
Oh my gosh, where to start…  Leave your ego at the door.  Know that you’re going to be nervous, this is all new.  Listen to the coaches teaching technique because that is key – it’s one thing to push yourself hard and another to get hurt because you’re not listening.  Have fun!!!  If it’s not fun, there’s no point in being here.  Don’t expect too much too fast – DO NOT weigh yourself!  Your body will change and you will likely gain weight before losing it because muscle weighs more than fat so just observe how your body feels and go with that.  Know that the first month is going to suck!  Your body will hurt, you’ll be hungry and you’ll feel like you’re the most uncoordinated person on earth and you’ll never get better, but you will!  Have faith!  Think of it as meeting up with friends for coffee but before coffee you need to put yourself through this rigorous activity, lol, but you’re with friends and it’s all good!  Take it one day at a time.
